Soon after arriving at the bike shop in Lahaina (West Maui Cycles) and beginning the day getting a few island bike rentals out to riders picking up bikes, I answered a phone call. The Maui bicycle community recently had DL Byron, publisher and author of bikehugger.com blog, in our midst while he was visiting Hawaii for a bicycle vacation on Maui. Though Byron visited several of the local bike shops on Maui, including West Maui Cycles in Lahaina, he was mostly left to enjoy his vacation and time with is family in private. Looking for a little adventure on your next Maui vacation? Don't really feel like doing another bike ride down the volcano? The now defunct sugar cane and pineapple fields above west Maui offer a great opportunity to experience Maui mountain biking while remaining near the Kaanapali resorts. The dirt roads left in the fields from the old cane trucks hauling cane can be challenging single track trails for a mountain bike ride on Maui, especially after a little rain.
