It must be spring time and Cycling on Maui is in full swing! Not only are there two organized cycling events coming up on Maui, we’re pleased to announce our new group rides for road bikes and mountain bike riders. The weekly road cycling rides are on Weds mornings and the mountain bike rides are on Sunday afternoons. Both group rides meet in front West Maui Cycles bike shop in Lahaina. After you read through the Weds group ride route details, check out how to get signed up for the Maui Metric Century ride on April 14th; the Invasive Race 4 Mountain Bike rally on April 6 and the Cycle to the Sun ride on June 29th. Our group bike rides and the organized cycling events are open to both cyclists visiting Maui and local riders! If you don’t have a bike to ride on Maui, make a reservation for a road bike or mountain bike to use for the ride.

Weekly Morning Group Bike Rides for Road Cycling

West Maui Cycles Weds Ride – Our group rides meet every Weds morning at 7:30 am in front of West Maui Cycles bike shop in Lahaina. If you are visiting Maui and need directions to our bike shop, visit our contact page.

A map view of the West Maui Loop bike ride around West Maui.

West Maui loop (clockwise) - This is a 58 mile loop of the west Maui Mountains. 3700' of vertical is gained. Riding the clockwise direction, the hills are shorter but more severe than riding counter clockwise. Most of the elevation is from Kapalua (mm30) to Mendez Ranch (mm9) on the Kahekili highway, a county highway. The mile markers (mm) begin in Wailuku and heading clockwise, until (mm42). Currently, the mile markers reverse at (mm16) and descend to 0 again as you near Wailuku. The rest of the ride is on the Honoapiilani highway, a state highway.

Leave the shop heading north on Honoapiilani highway (mm21.5). Regroup at (mm38) after the Wall (an 18% grade, .2 mile long hill right after (mm36)). The pavement from (mm14, Kahakuloa) to Mendez Ranch (mm5) is rough. After regrouping, the next stop will be at Curly's fruit stand (mm10). The next regroup will be at the County library just past the stoplight at Honoapiilani highway and Main Street. After (mm4) you will need to go straight past Waiehu Beach Road. You will come to a stop sign in Wailuku. This will be Vineyard Street. Take a right and go up three streets to a 5 story office building on your left. Turn left on that street and head to the stoplight. You will be on Honoapiilani highway at (mm0) and Main Street. Head straight through the light (legally). Stay on the main highway. Without any turns and in 21.5 miles you will be back at West Maui Cycles.

4 hours is a nice time to do this ride. Be respectful of the drivers on the narrower roads. They live here and are usually travelling to work at the times we ride. Please obey all traffic laws. The record is around 2 ½ hours. Mahalo for hanging out with our group.

West Maui loop (counter clockwise) - Please review the clockwise West Maui Loop route above. This is a 58 mile loop with 3700' of vertical gained. Most of the climbing is from (mm5) in Waihehe to Kapalua (mm30). As with the clockwise loop, you will be traveling on two highways, one state and one county.

After leaving the shop, we will ride south along the beaches then turn inland at (mm8, the whale watch lookout). At this time you will encounter moderate to heavy headwinds. Not to worry, the wins actually only last till you get to the trees at (mm4) Kahili Golf course road. Head straight into the town of Wailuku. This will be our first regroup point. Ride through stoplight at Main St. and the hwy. (legally) for one block. Turn right on Vineyard Street and descend to Market Street. Turn left and stay on Market Street through Happy Valley at which time you will do a 200 yard ascent up onto Kahekili hwy. Pretty straight forward - Don't make any major turns and you will be just fine! Our next regroup will be at Kaukini Gallery {mml3), a good place to get snacks and water. We will have done half of the climbing. The road from Mendez Ranch (mm7+) to Kahakuloa {mm14) is quite rough. Ride carefully, the road is very narrow. Our next regroup will be at Honolua Bay (mm 33+). Not much climbing left from here to the bike shop and usually downwind into Lahaina. Please remember to obey all traffic laws and be very respectful of the local drivers. They are usually headed to work when we do this ride. Mahalo for riding with us!
